Abstract

In recent years, discussion of the role of companies in our society has taken hold. This debate has been driven by cases of collusion, corruption, environmental damage, and new consumer demands. Some companies have been discredited and the legitimacy of the economic system has been called into question. All of this despite the undeniable development and welfare achieved in recent decades. The causes of the gap between social expectations and economic outcomes are, of course, many. In this article we argue that one of the origins of this dichotomy lies in the conception of value that has guided business activity.
