Abstract

The pension funds currently managed by the AFPs hold some USD 170 billion, equivalent to 70% of Chile's GDP. They invest according to return and risk optimization criteria in various instruments of the domestic capital market and in the international financial system. The article considers the possibility of additionally incorporating ethical investment criteria and reviews international experiences where such criteria are applied, such as Norway, Sweden, and Canada. Some reflections are offered on the potential contribution of pension funds to Sustainable Development in Chile.
